Just Another Phone Scam
I love getting these kind of messages. Even more when it turns out to be a fairly common scam. Here’s hoping that you don’t fall for it. I know I didn’t.
Yes this is Helen Williams I’m calling in reference to your federal student loan. I need to discuss your repayment options with the new changes that have taken effect recently so if you could be sure to give me a call back my number is 866-304-9119 and I’m gonna give your reference number if you would just have this handy when you call back it will make things a lot easier. Your reference number is 330304. Thank you.Actual content translated from the voicemail message.
According to reportthecall.com, this exact call has been reported numerous times. Each one leaving the same callback number and even the exact same reference number.
A couple of things to note here…
- “Helen” sounds like a live person leaving a voicemail. She is obviously not, but it’s good presentation.
- “Helen” also sounds like she speaks perfect English, and is not computer generated, as many of these calls are.
- In my case, my student loans were paid off years ago. So I’d not be inclined to return the call anyway.
If you get a message like this… likely exactly like this… do not respond.
You may be wondering why donotcall.gov doesn’t stop this kind of thing. Well, it’s probably an overseas company that is doing this and simply spoofing the phone numbers. So there’s nothing they can do. Even if it is US-based, crooks rarely follow the rules.
