The IRS and the State Department have begun enforcing a 2015 law revoking existing passports and denying new ones for US citizens who owe more than $51,000 in federal taxes. There are some exceptions such as if you are currently contesting an assessment, or you are paying off your taxes in installments or meet some other requirements.
So, if you’re planning to travel out of the country, you may want to make sure everything is in order.
