One piece of advice you have probably gotten before is that it’s best to shop around. For certain products, you won’t find much variation in pricing no matter who you buy it from. There may only be small differences of a few dollars.
However, for larger investments, these differences in price can be quite substantial. You could, in fact be, losing hundreds and sometimes even thousands of dollars by not being a more discerning shopper. There are certain times when you should absolutely get a professional second opinion on pricing.
One thing you should certainly get a second opinion on is the pricing for any kind of auto work. This includes repair work as well as any significant upgrades you may want to have installed on your vehicle. Certain mechanics have a reputation for ripping off customers either through inflated pricing or by convincing them to accept more repair work than they really need. Getting quotes from multiple mechanics can make it easier to determine which one is an outlier.
Glasses are something else you should consider getting a second opinion on. Just because an optometrist works in an eye clinic does not mean that eye clinic isn’t also a sales based business. They have an incentive to convince you to spend more on eye glasses. Get quotes on prescription glasses from multiple clinics. You may find that the same frames are priced differently. Also check with your insurance to find out if you can have your vision coverage pay for the price of the glasses entirely. The coverage may only pay for glasses from certain brands and clinics and not others.
Home repairs can also be very expensive. This is the case for plumbing repairs, furnace repairs, air conditioning and heating repair, electrical work and more. The prices different professionals charge can vary widely. Get multiple quotes from different professionals and repair companies before you make your decision. Also look for online reviews. Even if you want to save money, you shouldn’t pay for shoddy repair work that won’t really solve the problem.
Furniture is something else that can vary widely in price from different furniture stores. Make sure to shop around to find the best deal. The best deal should also include delivery and moving the furniture into your home. Many furniture companies may seem to have good deals until the price of delivery and handling is factored in.
It’s always a good idea to shop around. However, it’s absolutely foolish to not comparison shop for big and important purchases for things like car work, home repair work and furniture. If you’re not careful, you may end up spending much more than you would have if you did a little bit more research.
